Sloppy Joes

This is an easy, 5 ingredient recipe that is sure to please! I like to make this ahead of time and keep it warm in the crockpot, or make in the dutch oven and keep warm in the oven until we are ready to eat. It’s perfect for an after church meal. I was first introduced to this sloppy joe’s recipe when I was a kid…back when our friends from Mississippi, the Wilsons, would come to visit my family in Arkansas. This recipe would be multiplied several times over and was usually served with a side of party potatoes for a quick lunch to feed a crowd (that crowd usually included 10+ hungry guys coming from a construction job).

makes 6 servings

1 pkg. sweet hawaiian slider buns for serving (hamburger buns or sandwich bread will work too)

Ingredients:

1 pound ground beef or turkey

1/2 C. ketchup

1/2 C. BBQ sauce (we love Sweet Baby Ray’s, but anything will work)

1/2 envelope dry onion soup mix

2 tsp. liquid smoke

Directions: Brown meat, drain of grease. Add all other ingredients, heat through. Serve on buns or sandwich bread. Enjoy!

  1. Looks good, will have to try your recipe. My son loves “joe sandwiches ” he says it’s not nice to call people sloppy. So he will not eat “sloppy joes” lol. His favorite meal is Joe sandwiches, plain baked potatoes no butter or anything and corn on the cob with butter ( a pound of butter if he had his way. ) I think you decided my supper for tomorrow but he may have to settle for plain green beans. A close second (only thing he will use butter on us corn. )

    1. Hey Jade. I’m not sure if there is a liquid smoke substitute, but if you can’t find it, I’m sure there are lots of sloppy joe’s recipes other places, or packets that might not include liquid smoke. 🙂

  2. I made this tonight and served it with the party potatoes recipe as a side dish, just as you recommended. I am finding that every time I use a Duggar family recipe, my meals are so incredibly tasty yet so simple to prepare for my family! Thank you so much for sharing these “fail proof” recipes! I’m looking forward to serving this meal again for a bigger family party. So much flavor, yet so easy to make. Same goes for the potatoes… Delicious!

    1. Hi Jill, this is definitely one for Friday night easy! Thanks! I’m wondering though, you said you made it in advance and kept it warm. Like a few other dishes, some are better made ahead of time to give the flavors time to meld together. Is this dish better if made ahead of time?

      1. Thanks Holly,
This recipe is great eaten right away or kept hot and served later! It could even be stored in the fridge or freezer and heated up to serve later. That’s what I love about it! And it’s sure to be a crowd pleaser!
        Thanks,
        Jill
