Q & A: Babies, Pants, Nose Ring, Tattoos & Faith!

After our first poll on Instagram a few weeks ago, we compiled a list of questions, then had fun answering them in our first Q & A session last week. We are happy to answer more of your questions in this week’s video session. If you missed the last couple opportunities to ask your questions, it’s not too late! Drop your questions in the comment section below and we will do our best to incorporate as many as possible in our upcoming videos!

Many people have asked about some of our decisions to do things differently than my (Jill’s) family culture growing up. People have also asked about our religious beliefs and faith. We tackle these questions and more in the video below.

A book that has helped us a lot is the book, “Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life,” by Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend. It addresses so many areas of life and relationships…marriage, child training, extended family, work, etc.

I know this may seem like a bad question to some, but I have to ask it. How do you guys feel about cannabis (aka marijuana)? I know that the Bible speaks against intoxication, but nowadays there are many cannabis products legally on the market such as CBD products that don’t produce intoxicating effects. Would you’re family ever consider the benefits of this plant?

          Great Q&A

          A few things.

          1. I teasingly say Kill you say like alot.

          2. I grew up in a fundamental baptist church, and did not wear pants. When I was 17 or 18, I told my parents I wanted to wear pants. I felt it is one thing for a church to set a standard, but my convictions could be different . My parents convictions were not the same as mine. Fortunatly my parents respected that.

I was just going to comment on the same thing. Loved watching these videos but I believe Jill needs to work on how many times she says “like” during a conversation. It takes away from what she’s trying to convey and makes it very hard to want to continue listening because it is very excessive. But these two are great and love they have found their own way.

        3. Do you guys eat pork products ? “The pig is also unclean; although it has a split hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses.” – Deuteronomy 14:8 (NIV) ?
        4. Have you ever considered other religions ?

Miss seeing you guys. It’s a shame that sharing the money from the show is not equally divided (TLC could help in that aspect). Young couples starting with babes or the younger ones in a trust account should be a parent’s priority not “stashing his cash”. Mom needs to stand up for her kids if she’s gonna have 19. She is so wishy washy. Yes, the husband is the head of the family but not to the detriment/separation of the family. Shame on Jimbob & esp. Michelle!

Firstly, I have watched your family from the very beginning, and while my practices as a Christian were completely different (I.e I wore pants, have tattoos, cut my hair short, etc.), I did appreciate the dedication to Christ and his works! Secondly, I have enjoyed watching you and Derick establish what works best for YOUR family. You, like many, exemplify the belief that a person can be good and follow Christ, yet not conform to any prescribed ideals about what that individual should or does look like. Thank you for being you and sharing your story!

I agree! God sees our heart. While modesty should be our standard, nose rings or tattoos have little to do with modesty. I appreciate how you and Derek have decided what’s best for your family and are living it out. Bravo! When we follow our parents parameters, it can backfire later because your parents made decisions for their family based on their own faith and beliefs. You have a faith and beliefs too. Being the body of Christ would be strange if we were all noses! Read Romans 5: 1. Having been justified by faith in Jesus, we have peace with God. It doesn’t put parameters of what clothes you wear here or if you have a tattoo. It’s simply trusting in Jesus for salvation and following after Him. God bless you!

I have watched since before you actually became a show, the 14+ kids specials ya’ll had. I have 2 questions
        1) I know you just said you are open to more kids. I remember watching that you did not have the easiest of deliveries with either. I wanted to ask if you are thinking more kids naturally, or is that safe after your first 2, health wise? Even if you can only adopt those would be really lucky kids.

2)I notice how much happier you seem lately. I’m not seeing the more forced kind of smiles we became accustomed to seeing. Knowing what you know now, that you can be yourself and still serve Christ, if a brother or sister came to you for help becoming themselves like Derick has helped you, would you be there for them or even take them in or would that cause to much strife in the family?

Besides the questions, keep on the path you are on. Happy looks really good on you!

Do you still talk/visit your parents & siblings on a regular basis?

        • Blair E

Its hard to answer personal questions that everyone watches your every move. You say like a lot, at peast you’re genuine person and care about your answer! I think this is hard to do based on being in the public eye and having people be so nasty toward you just bc you were on tv. You both are a great couple and down to earth and love eachother a lot and that shows the most. Don’t let people make you feel that you HAVE to explain yourself but thank you for doing it for your fans! I’ve watched you all for a long time and I always knew you were a hippy chick

There is also a person on youtube named Katie Joy and her channel is without a crystal ball please dont be friends with her she is a very fake and toxic person she is only looking out for herself and financial gain.I know your cousin Amy is acquainted with her and recently did a live with her but please dont fall for her fake frienship. I am a fellow believer from California who has watched the show you grew up on (Jill). First of all, thank you for taking the time to answer the many questions I’m sure you are getting.
I wrote to say how encouraged I was to finally hear someone from your family say “leave and cleave”. Maybe it’s been mentioned, but I’ve never heard it until your video. (I mean even mentioned in the show you used to be on)
I think this command from scripture to “leave and cleave” is vital to you living life how the Lord has led you and your husband. And yet, I appreciate the balance you said about deferring to others, but not ultimately making decisions based on what they think. God has now called you into a greater role – wife and mother.
As the mother of 2 married children, I believe the best thing I can do for my married kids is to always defer to their spouses. Why? Because I know that’s what God says in His Word they are to do. I distinctly remember the week after my daughter got married I went to help her get settled in her home. She asked me a question about her wedding gifts (can’t remember exactly what). My instinct up to that point was to say “let me ask Dad”. But, I literally stopped myself and said “What do you think (her husband’s name) would want? Maybe you should check with him first.” I’m called not just as her mom, but an older mom to always hold up Scripture before my own opinions or thoughts.
So, this was just a comment, not necessarily a question. I was just so encouraged to finally hear that verse quoted. But, not just to “say” it, but to explain how you both as a couple go about making the many different decisions in your marriage.
    Thank you for your time!

First, congratulations Jill on finding your true self outside of your family! I love your family by the way! I myself was raised in a devout Catholic family and also needed to find my true self. Two, your boys are beautiful and a true reflection on your parenting. This is a sensitive subject but I feel I must ask. How do you relate as a Republican and a Trump supporter but at the same time follow the gospel? It is really exhausting for me trying to follow Gods word , holding on to my faith and support an extremely flawed administration that seems to be focused on only one issue and not all? I understand there is more to it but my husband of 30 years and I are really struggling. We have tried speaking with family, friends, church members but we only get deflection and/or arguments about both sides of the issue. I don’t want an argument or excuses just real conversation. How does being a midwife play into your beliefs? Thank you for speaking on your personal life and being open to your fans.

I’ve really enjoyed these Q&A’s. I was really interested to see Derek say in the first video that he wanted to focus on law for minorities and the under represented. I just wondered if he felt studying law had altered his politics at all, or if perhaps as a couple recent events has caused you to think about things differently or, solidified already held opinions – whatever they are? That’s probably not a good question but I’m intrigued all the way over here in the UK. Take care!

Hi Jill and Derick, if you guys do a fourth Q&A, I have some questions! If you guys could go back 10-15 years, what would you tell your younger self? Also (if this applies to you), how do you deal with narcissistic or emotionally/verbally/mentally abusive family members (I’m 17 and currently going no contact so I would like to know your input)? Lastly, if you feel comfortable answering this question, if you could redo your courtship (so like no chaperones, courting for a longer time period, etc.) would you? From what we see on TV, it seems like the courting couples never get the chance to have deep conversations and do “normal” couple things (hold hands, sit close together, etc.) without having a chaperone. God bless!

Great video, but Jill, try not to say “like” so many times. It weakens what you have to say. You do not come across now, after counseling, as a weak person, but with all the “likes” you say, we can still hear hesitancy on your part to take a stand for what you really want to say. Ask your counselor about this and see if they agree. Also, it’s OK to talk openly about what’s going on with your family and how you feel about them, what they did to you growing up, and so on. It’s obvious you’re still skirting some issues (“people pleasing”) and are not being completely honest with your audience, but more importantly, with yourself. Other than that GOOD JOB and keep it up. There are a LOT of people who admire you for breaking free from the abusive cult-like upbringing you and your siblings endured. Complete mental and physical control wrapped and packaged as love is still abuse. So glad you’re realizing this. So glad your children are not experiencing that upbringing themselves.

It’s OK if you don’t post this, but please at least read it and think about it. Thanks.

So a few questions here: what do
You think of vaccines and have you vaccinated your kids? How about your parents? Do you believe in aliens or ghosts? How do you feel and what do you think about the pandemic? What about the riots going on? Ect? How is Derick taking care of the family while in Law school? Is he working too? Can we know about the csection you had? I had 2 and panic attacks through both of mines. I know it’s a lot of questions, hopefully you guys could answer these. Thanks

Thanks for your honesty!! It is so great to hear from your hearts. It’s wild that all of your family doesn’t support you for following your convictions but I’m grateful you’re able to use your experience to share advice on creating healthy boundaries. Would love to hear more about your thoughts on/ experience with therapy and how it’s helped you. Also, have you made any decisions in how you’ll raise your kids that you didn’t think you would growing up? (Besides school 🙂 )

I’m curious about whether any of these “divisive” topics came up between you two before marriage? Did you already have a sense that your family would be different than Jill’s family or did it naturally evolve after you were married?

Also wonder about your view of family planning methods. Having an unlimited number of children seems to be a holy grail of the Duggar’s and while I imagine not all the adult children agree, I don’t think any have come out and said “we have no problem with birth control.”

I enjoy your videos! When I was in nursing school I had to take a speech class. It was so hard because the professor made us give a speech over and over again until we did not use a “word whiskers” Those are sounds um, ah, “like” and others. Jill, I think you could benefit from a basic speech class. You are so nice and have so much to say and your message may come across better if you eliminated word whiskers. I don’t have a question but I just wanted to say I appreciate how you guys seem to be more loving towards the world lately. I grew up watching the show and I always sorta had a vibe that the family was very judgemental towards outsiders (non Christians) which honestly could’ve just been fear. But now that your becoming a more real you, I can see a love and sensitivity to people who are not like you, which is amazing. Showing people love is so much more powerful in spreading the word of Jesus than judgment. So proud of you guys.

I appreciate your Q & A videos. I appreciate them greatly. I have a question and a word of caution.
My question is, how can you encourage the mom who would rather be a keeper at home instead of getting a job outside the home?
Also my world of caution is to beware of people asking questions that are asked to test you so they can have more poison to spread on the internet because they disagree with your answers . I’ve seen questions that remind me questions that were asked of Jesus by the Pharisees in order to test him. Don’t be afraid to use scripture and discernment in choosing which questions to answer. Remember the world hated Jesus first and they will hate you and us Christians in general because of Jesus.

Where in the scriptures does it say you should make such potentially false warnings about others? I don’t think the Bible encourages this. In fact, there’s a commandment about not bearing false witness. You seem to think people here have an agenda for asking questions. Maybe some are genuinely curious after watching the show and not getting answers there, only more questions. Maybe Jill and Derick are happy to clear up those questions. I really don’t think they are worried about “poison” on the Internet at this point. Their willingness to personally answer questions says the opposite. Nobody is “hating” them or Christians. There’s nothing in these responses but support!

I take issue with your statement that the world will hate them because they are Christian. I am Jewish and while I would give anything for someone to actually explain some of their religious comments because I don’t understand the terms, I have never and do not HATE them. Why do they ONLY have to use scripture to answer questions? Answers are rarely in the Bible, it provides guidance and rules instead. People also often forget there are many versions of the Bible and a variety of chapters are recognized by only a handful of denominations. Translations also make a HUGE difference in understanding the bible. I am more interested in what they do when the bible has an internal conflict — how do they resolve it? For example, they indicated the Bible would be fine with tattoos assuming it was a respectful tattoo. However, the Old Testament and Orthodox Hews can’t have their bodies tattooed and if they are tattooed they have to be buried in a separate part of the Jewish cemetery with the suicides. The Holocaust markings caused a major issue for Jewish cemetery sites. The Talmud is the written law and the Mishna is the oral law. Check out Leviticus 19:28 and discussion at https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/tattooing-in-jewish-law/

No question, but a comment: Tattoos are not as painful as a piercing. True, the tattoo takes longer, but the needle doesn’t pierce your skin that deeply. The day after just feels like a mild sunburn, and the next day it’s over. I tell people it hurt way worse when my mamma whipped me as a kid than a tattoo does.

    Jill and Derrick-

This was a great Q&A. I just wanted to express my deep respect and admiration for the two of you forging your own way in the world.

    And specifically to Jill-

It takes a lot of courage to step outside from the restrictive values your were raised under and make your own decisions about what your values should be and how you should live your life. You are such an amazing person for going to therapy, and for talking about your experiences. It is also a wonderful thing to keep your faith and to read the bible yourself and keep a close relationship with Christ. You are right that no church is perfect, and the best churches have a diverse congregation with different interpretations of scripture and different practices at home. I grew up Southern Baptist and am now Episcopalian and have met wonderful people who shared my relationship with God at both churches.

One thing that you may already be aware of but I just wanted to share is on the subject of modesty. Modesty as preached by the church you grew up in and by many other more conservatives denominations is not exactly the biblical definition of modesty.

Modesty is not about the amount of skin an outfit is showing, or about whether or not an outfit is “sexy”. The word modesty, both today, and in biblical times, is synonymous with humility. When we compliment someone for being modest we often are saying they are not boastful. To dress modestly as a woman is to not be boastful of your money or status or looks and to place importance on what is on the inside rather than the outside.

1 Timothy 2:9 says: “likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire,”

This is very much in line with a large number of bible verses encouraging humility for both men and women. A woman can be “modest” in the sense that she covers her shoulders and wears long skirts and still not be modest in the biblical sense if she wears flashy jewelry or shows off designer labels. You can wear pants and be modest. You can wear a sleeveless top and shorts and be modest provided you are not dressed in a way that is flashy, ostentatious, or attention seeking. Outfits that are extremely revealing are usually immodest, but that is because the intention is to shift focus onto a woman’s outer beauty instead of her inner beauty. I think the word “respectable” is also key because that’s a subjective term that seems to take into account the values and standards of the society and location you’re currently in. What is respectable in my community might not be respectable in yours and vice versa.

Of course you may have your own interpretation which I respect but having done research on this and consulted with several pastors I genuinely think this is what the original intent was in the bible.

But then to add my own personal, subjective opinion about it I think the verse about adorning ourselves with modesty is more general guidance about what we should be prioritizing in our lives than a hard and fast rule about every outfit we wear every single day of our lives. IMHO the spirit of the rule is that as women we really shouldn’t be wasting too much time worrying about what we wear one way or the other.

But I also understand from the perspective of someone who also grew up around women who preferred to stay very covered-up that sometimes you try something on, and it looks good, and you know on a rational level half the women in your town are wearing the same thing and you don’t think God wouldn’t have a problem with it, but it still just feels like something you’re not comfortable with and that’s 100% okay.

You’re a wonderful and beautiful person and God bless you and your family.

I am a Christian woman who has lived life to the fullest, explored this world with fascination and wonder. I have always tried to live according to the teachings of the church and gods word, however life often throws a curveball and I have stumbled occasionally and my faith has come into question.
I believe that as long as you live your life with love in your heart and generosity in your spirit and allow the teachings in the bible guide you then if you slip up and stumble your faith will carry you through.
Mistakes happen that’s just reality, god forgives . You have to find that inner peace and strength to forgive yourself and others and move on with your life in the way you want. Happiness is a choice and I choose to be happy.
Jill and Derick as long as you live your life the way you want to and raise your family the way you want to, that’s all that matters. No one has the right to interfere or criticize.

I know you hesitate to say too much so you don’t anger your family. But please remember, most of us out here know what is going on with your family and we also know you are not welcome at your family’s home unless your father is present. Let it be known that your father is fooling no one, we all know and understand his motives. You and Derrick have made the right choices. It is sad in many ways, but it is also a blessing in disguise for both of you. So many are saying that they never thought you, Jill, would be the one to break free. But you have started that journey and you are doing so well! Personally, I am so glad you have chosen to get real therapy. This will be one of the best gifts you have ever given yourself. There are so many of us ( NOT Duggar fans) who are so proud of what you are accomplishing. Keep doing what you ( both) are doing. You are on your way. I am a long time fan of the Dillard family part of the Duggar story and Jill was my favorite “Duggar” to watch. I am happy you are now doing Youtube videos and Q&As. I watched your latest video and had some follow up questions. Please forgive my ignorance because I am not Christian so some of the terms you used were confusing to me. Regarding getting your hair cut, was the previous decision to NOT cut it based on a religious mandate or a previous personal choice? Are Southern Baptists allowed to cut their hair?

This leads me to my next question – I know Jill was raised as Christian but I don’t think she was Southern Baptist. Did you, as a family, undertake any effort of comparative religion such as considering Catholic, Baptist, Episcopalian, Pentecostal, etc? If not, why not? If so, can you describe the process? I have an interest in coparative religion myself. I am a Reform Jew. Orthodox Jewish women are required to cut their hair and wear wigs upon their marriage so that ONLY their husband sees their hair. Based on the belief that “a woman’s hair is her crowning glory” Jews keep their hair for their beloveds and Pentecostals choose to never cut their hair. When you do bible study, do you undertake comparative religion research to discuss various interpretations?

While versions of the bible do you use? Unlike the Old Testament which is uniform for all Jewish branches, I understand the New Testament contains a variety of different chapters depending on the faith and the version and some Chapters are controversial.

Derick, I understand you are finishing law school. Congrats. Is law school in person right now with COVID? I am a lawyer myself, I am curious as to what type of law you wish to practice. Are you planning on getting your LLM & practice tax law since you have your CPA license?

Thanks for Q and As! It is so nice to see your growth and honesty with so many aspects of your life. I was wondering if you cold talk a little more about your therapy journey – why you first went, how long you have been going, etc. Also curious if therapy was encouraged/discouraged in your family or religion growing up. Some people have such judgemental opinions about therapy or are afraid to get help, so it’s really great you have been open about going to therapy.

Also, I noticed some people commenting on your ‘likes’ or whatever in the video. Please don’t feel self conscious about that, a lot of people do the same thing! It seemed like you were nervous, I assume about offending your family, but I do think breaking away from your upbringing and the TV show is really brave of you. Can’t imagine how hard that would be and I’m so sorry that some seem very unsupportive. Me and a lot of other people I know find what you’r doing really inspiring. I know that doesn’t make up for an unsupportive family, but I just wanted you to know how much some of us a rooting for you.

I very much enjoyed listening to the Q & A, and am glad to see you have made decisions based on what you both are happy & comfortable with, but was just wondering if Derrick has any regrets about the negative comments he made about some very marginalised people and whether he would include them when he talks about working with very isolated people in communities in his law work. I believe every human being should be included in every walk of life and there isnt a God who would exclude someone due to their sexuality or gender, including people who felt they were born in the wrong physical body.

I’ve been a fan of your family ever since I saw the first Discovery TV special on them. I am so proud of you for breaking away from things you didn’t feel were good in your life anymore. So please understand when I ask these questions that I hope you will address, I am still very much a fan.

    1. What actually happened with Samuel’s birth, and are you actually able to still have children? There are rumors all over the Internet about it, as I’m sure you know. Why be so mysterious, and not just come out and tell us? Yes, I totally know it is no one else’s business. But you guys are a public family, and, well, you gave us a forum 😉

    2. I know that you feel alternative lifestyles (LGBTW etc) are sinful. But I want to know – Have you TRULY hung out with and become friends with any of these people? Not just “I know this one guy who dresses like a girl.” Have you actually shared a meal, went to their home, met their partners/children, and heard about the things they have gone through? I find a lot of people who condemn others for their “sins” have not actually had any true experience building a relationship of friendship with them. And it is so easy to condemn someone for a “sin” that everyone can see, meanwhile judgement and hate in your own hearts is just as grievous a sin.

Thank you for your thoughtful and honest reflections on our questions.

Just wanted to pop in here and tell you that I really appreciated this Q&A. I have been having a tough time with the whole leave and cleave thing after being raised a whole lot like you were. Been married over 5 years and it’s been a growing journey going from that to decisions as a couple and being under my husband and not under my parents anymore.
Thank you for this. I would love if you’d talk more on your journey with this and other things you’ve dealt with.

Commenting again because I can’t find the one I left before. Probably I’m missing it but…

I loved the book Boundaries. It’s fantastic.

Did you ever find out why Derrick was getting sick while running? Or whatever was going on with that?

Thank you so much for sharing! One question I always have with people who have part of their life on a show is: what is the most common misconception that people have about you that you would like to clear up? Or alternatively, do you manage to avoid seeing negative comments from strangers?

Question for the Q&A- which Duggar siblings is Jill in contact with the most these days? Growing up jill and joy Anna were super close, are you still really close and a part of each other’s lives?

    Hi Dilliard family,

No question from me just want to say thanks for sharing your truth with us. I pray you continue to learn and grow together to build on your strengths as a couple. Keep spreading positivity and encouragement! Also, you are very brave to open up a Q and A to the masses, some of these questions are ridiculous!

Hi Jill and Derrick, My question is this, I know Jill was homeschooled and probably graduated high school via that homeschooling and I know her parents are against higher education would Jill consider going to college? It would be awesome if she could maybe become a nurse (RN) midwife? I also want to say it is amazing how much you both have grown in you marriage and faith. God bless you both.

I’m not one to ever leave a comment, but I just wanted to drop by and say how happy I am for you guys. We’re the same age, I’ve watched the show since you guys first came onto TLC and I’ve always loved the vibes.

A lot of the comments here are really fast to be too personal. Just know that the greater public supports you and Derrick and we’re happy to see whatever life brings you. Your spirit is beautiful and you guys have a love that sets an example. To be random, everyone always looks at their partner to an uncomfortable degree. It very refreshing to see you comfortable enough to just talk without checking in.

If I had a question, it would be something like what are some hobbies you’ve never thought you would enjoy, but you’ve found that you love?

    Questions:
    1. You said you would not go into debt when courting. Is that realistic for a young family (mortgage, college, etc.) like yourself?
    2. Any chance Derick will pursue jobs outside of the area and would you be ok with relocating for a job for him?
    3. I don’t expect you to answer this but wish there was more discussion on Counting On about how the young couples/families support themselves. The jobs for Jim Bob don’t seem lucrative enough to support a home/multiple children/etc. while building any sort of savings for retirement/future kids’ educations/etc. I’m thinking of Josiah, Joe, Ben, Josh etc. Are they all living off advertising/sponsor for social media accounts of their wives? What will they do when Jim Bob is gone (if he is giving them a stipend to pay bills)? How can they save any money for retirement or to buy their own home in that environment? I think a post about the siblings’ financial options (even without naming them, just in general) would be of interest to so many. Because now, young viewers (in particular) have an unrealistic view that a young couple, with no college education (or even tech school), can have their own home, the wife can stay home (no paid income), they can have multiple kids, they are all dressed nice and have decent cars, and everything is fine. This is so unrealistic. If the husband dies or develops a disability, what becomes of the wife and kids? Social media advertising will support the family? Maybe it does but something seems unspoken throughout these relationships about how they pay their expenses.

I love finding out about y’all. I can totally understand some of what Jill is going through with her family. I went through a lot with my family in the past & I feel that nothing will be the same but I’m trying to learn like Jill said to be ok with everyone not being ok with my decisions. I feel like God & my husband are the only ones that I need to worry about pleasing. Keep up the good work of cleaving unto each other, growing in faith & family.

How do participants on the TLC shows (like Counting On) get health insurance or do they go without?

As you probably know, the ACA doesn’t let you use your parents plan once you are married so all the young couples would need their own. How can they afford it? Do they buy on the ACA exchange, paying 10% of income?

This is the one area that keeps so many people working in traditional jobs that provide employment based coverage, Derick, once you get a job after school this is one very nice benefit.

I would be really interested to know: what/who made you decide to seek therapy? I could be completely wrong, but my impression is that your family of origin is not into ‚secular‘ therapy, only seeking help in praying to Jesus (don‘t get me wrong, I belIeve God gave us the capacity to develop medicine and psychotherapy, so I consider it one way God is offering us help).

Hi Jill & Derek, I have really enjoyed watching these Q&As as well as your other recent videos. I really admire how you are working together as a team to make your own choices about what’s best for your family. It must take a lot of courage to step apart from what others in your family & community believe about attire, TV, alcohol, homeschooling, etc. You did such a great job in these videos being clear & open about your lives, and I can only imagine how much courage it must take to put yourselves out there like this. Major kudos! You guys seem happy in your videos, and your kids are adorable!

Not sure if Jill would want to or is able to answer these questions, and please feel no pressure to do so if you’d rather not. But I have always wondered – what was it like to grow up on TV? I remember watching your family on TV when I was a kid (I’m about the same age as Jinger), and I have always wondered what it was like to have the cameras around as you go about your lives. I suppose that some of your siblings wouldn’t even remember a time before being on TV. Would they film all the time or just certain periods throughout the year? How did it affect your regular daily lives? Does your family watch the episodes? How have your lives changed since leaving the show? Do your kids know that their cousins are on TV? Thanks for being so open & honest in these recent Q&As! Your commitment to each other & your family is inspiring.

    Best,
    Sarah

First, I’m so proud of you for branching out. It takes a lot of courage, and your bravery deserves to be recognized. Second, I’m so happy that you went to therapy! Therapy has been extremely helpful to me in overcoming an abusive/traumatic childhood, but I also know that IBLP/most Fundamentalist or evangelical (like my old belief system) faiths discourage therapy. My question is: what helped guide your decision to seek therapy or how did you know the time was right to get help?

Hello Derick and Jill! Thank you for doing these Q&As, I enjoy getting updated on your family. My question I hope you answer is, do y’all belong to the IBLP? I know a couple of the Bates kids have spoke out saying they no longer follow the IBLP way of life. I was just curious if you guys do or dont. Also, what are your views on Trick or treating? Will you allow your kids to go? Thank you for continuing to share your life with us. God Bless

    Interesting and illuminating Q&A.

Derick, you have a great smile from your long dental journey. However, you were in treatment for a long time and endured a lot of pain. Were you pressured to do this because of the show or network? If you had to do it all again, would you do orthodontics as an adult?

Which candidate will y’all be supporting in 2020 presidential election?

    Reply
  182. Maira

As a Christian I wonder many things as well, but noticed how many people commented on your blog and ask things like if you have the right answer to it ! I am responsible for my decisions and I am the only one that faces the consequences of them!! I noticed that you mentioned “the Bible says this, but I think!!” I don’t think that you have the answer to any of the questions being asked… the scriptures does! So people should go ahead and read, rather than be asking another human being just like you when you don’t know the answer, because you’re not even sure yourself!!! People needs to stop following people and set their eyes on Jesus!! Would Jesus pierced himself? Would Jesus tattoo himself? Would God approved if I did this or that? That should be people’s questions about themselves… but we rather ask each other so that later on we can excuse ourselves for making wrong decisions!!! Read your bibles and allow God to be your guide!!! God bless you all!

Thank you for sharing this! I love how you guys share why you have the convictions you do, as we are no longer living under the law, but under grace! It makes sense that you would develop your own mindset too, after “leaving and cleaving”.

I know you mentioned that there are no verses in the Bible about Tattoos.
I am wondering if you’ve ever thought about what Leviticus 19:28 has to say about not making markings/cuttings in your flesh for the dead and if that might help you in developing more of that conviction for why you may/may not try a tattoo. Just a thought!
    Anyway,
Love you guys! And keep these awesome videos going!
